Depuis quelques
semaines, mon fil d’actualité Facebook est envahi d’appels à occuper
les lieux les plus inattendus, de l’université de Florence à Iowa
City. C’est plutôt flatteur, car cela veut dire que je
connais des gens marrants, dynamiques, volontaires, altruistes, sympathiques.
On a toujours raison de s’indigner, on a même toujours
raison de se révolter
Et pourtant, je ne peux m’empêcher
de ressentir un certain malaise devant cette révolte qui ne
sait pas où elle va, ou qui va dans trois directions incompatibles.
D’un côté, on regrette l’état social-démocrate,
le compromis keynésien qui a permis pendant cinquante ans aux
riches de s’enrichir en engraissant un peu leurs pauvres. D’un
autre côté, on prend conscience enfin de la légitimité des
revendications de tous ceux qui, en Chine ou ailleurs, réclament
leur part d’un rêve peut-être moins occidental qu’on
ne le croit, mais qui va coûter des sous et réchauffer
la planète. Et puis, tant qu’à y être, on
voudrait quand même aussi la sauver cette planète parce
que, bon, on n’en a qu’une. Nous ne sommes pas seulement
devenus tous keynésiens, nous sommes aussi tous généreux
tiers-mondistes et tous verts et malthusiens, et cela fait quand même
un peu beaucoup. Quand les anciens paradigmes ne fonctionnent plus,
il en faut un nouveau. Je l’imagine modeste, social et technologique,
mais je n’ai pas la formule.
Alors, j’irai volontiers faire la fête à Florence
ou Iowa City, ou vraisemblablement plus près de chez moi, mais
quelqu'un a-t-il une idée pour l'after ?

These last weeks,
my facebook newsfeed has been overwhelmed by appeals to “occupy” the
most unexpected spots, from Iowa City to the University of
Florence. It’s flattering – it means I have nice,
concerned, dynamic, altruists and active friends. As the French
proverb says, revolt is always right, and indignation is probably
even more.
Anyway, I can’t
help feeling uneasy with a revolt that doesn’t seem to
go anywhere, or rather wants to in three really cute but apparently
not compatible directions. First, we want back the social-democrat
Keynesian state, which allows the rich to get richer while
nevertheless fattening the poors. Second, we find the Chinese
and all other southerners legitimate in their development dream,
even if less westernized than we formerly believed, but we
know it will cost much and make the earth even more warmer.
And then, by the way, there’s the earth, and we have
only one, so better save it. A few years ago, the word was “we’re
all Keynesians now”. Well, now we’re all Keynesians,
we’re all generous Third World and emerging countries
supporters, and we’re also all green and therefore more
or less Malthusians. Feels a bit too much, and messy. When
old paradigms don’t work, we need a new one. I bet it
will be modest, social and high-tech, but that’s a wild
guess.
So, I’ll be happy to join the party in Florence, Iowa City
or probably somewhere nearer from here. But what about the after
party ? any idea ?
